Building a Haven: Creating Dementia-Friendly Environments

Memory Care Ann Arbor

Creating a safe and supportive environment for residents who suffer from dementia can make a significant difference in their well-being. Our new memory care building is designed for Alzheimer’s and dementia care in mind to help foster familiarity, reduce confusion, and promote a sense of calm. We’ve taken the following factors into consideration when we built our new facility, including:

Lighting

Natural light is a priority. Open curtains and blinds during the day, and strategically placed lamps avoid harsh shadows and overly bright areas. Well-lit entrances and hallways are essential for navigation.

Simplicity

We minimize clutter and busy patterns in shared spaces. Our design uses contrasting colors to differentiate walls, floors, and furniture. This visual clarity helps people with dementia recognize objects and navigate their surroundings with ease.

Safety and Security

We prioritize safety and security above all else to ensure your loved one is taken care of. We secure potentially dangerous items like medications and cleaning supplies. Handrails are present on stairs and pathways are clear throughout the space. In outdoor areas, we created secure boundaries to prevent residents from wandering.

Landmark Living

People with dementia often rely on landmarks for orientation. We recommend incorporating familiar objects or pictures throughout their personal space to create a homier feel. This can be anything from a favorite painting to a cherished plant. Even a brightly colored door can become a recognizable landmark.

Creating a Sense of Calm

A calm and soothing environment is essential! We considered calming paint colors and natural textures and comfortable furniture throughout. Music therapy can also be a great way to promote relaxation and positive emotions.

Remember, It's a Journey!

Dementia is a progressive condition, so the needs of the individual will change. The key is to create a flexible environment that can be easily adapted. You should regularly assess the space and adjust as needed to ensure continued comfort and safety for your loved one.
